The organization is called "Electronic Frontiers New Hampshire".
We are supportive of the goals of the "Electronic Frontier
Foundation", located in Washington, DC, but are not directly
affiliated with EFF.
The broad mission of Electronic Frontiers New Hampshire is "to ensure
protection of freedom of speech and privacy in electronic communication;
to help policy-makers, the media, and the general public understand the
online world; and to help the citizens of New Hampshire gain access
to government information electronically."
Specifically, our goals are:
- to make sure that important ideas in electronic communication
have a place to air in our area, and receive sufficient and
correct notice by the media and by government;
- to focus attention on civil rights as applied to electronic
communication and to provide a forum wherein people learn about
and become more aware of issues impacting on these rights;
- to bring to light and protect against encroachments by government
upon individual liberties in electronic communication;
- to provide a voice against these enchroachments and to encourage
active involvement in making this voice heard from a grassroots
level;
- to find ways to obtain access to government information
electronically;
- to educate policy-makers, media, and the general public about
electronic communication and it's benefits and issues;
- to foster better communication between people throughout New
Hampshire through electronic communication means.
We pursue a variety of activites that are coordinated
through the mailing lists mentioned below.
The following mailing lists are operated by EFNH for communication
and discussion. All lists are hosted by MV Communications and all
lists have the address "listname@mv.com" (ex.
"efnh-announce@mv.com")
Subscription information is below the list descriptions. Please note
that the descriptions of list activities are only preliminary and will
undoubtably evolve. If people are interested in starting another list
on an EFNH-related subject, please send a message to
"efnh@mv.com".
efnh-announce
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU STAY SUBSCRIBED TO THIS LIST! This is the
general list for announcements of upcoming events, alerts about
impending legislation/hearings, or administrative notes such as
this one. It is *the* list for communicating to *all* those
interested in EFNH. At some point in the not-too-distant future,
this list will also be connected to a USENET newsgroup and
FidoNet echo. It is intended to be a low-traffic, announce-only list.
Announcements/alerts from the other lists will be posted to this
list.
efnh-discuss
This list is for general discussion of issues.
efnh-congress
This group will be concerned with Federal legislation (like
Clipper and Digital Telephony). Activities might include communicating
our opinions on these to all of our Congressional offices, meeting
with Congressional staff, etc. Also might include developing
alerts to send to the broader NH online community on these issues.
Also might include working with the Congressional offices to help
make them more accessible to the online community. And just
continuing to educate ourselves on these federal issues.
efnh-state
This group will address what legislation is happening on the state
level and/or what legislation *could* happen on the state level.
It might research who should be contacted on issues and send out
alerts about that. Might meet/talk with state legislators.
efnh-speakers
This group will handle the occasional requests for speakers
we have been receiving, and might initiate contact with community
groups (Rotaries, etc.) letting them know we have speakers available.
efnh-network
This group will work on our online communication efforts. Issues
include: connection of "efnh-announce" to a newsgroup and FidoNet;
what info we should make available via ftp/gopher/WWW; how to make
information available to non-Internet folks (ex. using Eric's BBS);
creating a repository of EFNH-related documents; and any other
network-related issues.
efnh-netinfo
This list is for people you want to receive my (Dan York) filtering
of e-mail *I* receive from various lists about new Internet services,
new ways to access government info, or just other generally
interesting news about the Internet or new opportunies available
for Internet users. I receive mail from several lists, including the
deluge from "net-happenings", and can *very* easily forward mail.
Some of this info I was previously forwarding to "efnh-discuss".
If you already get "net-happenings", don't bother subscribing to
this list - this is just my own view of what stuff I receive I think
might be of interest to EFNH folks. I have no idea of the volume
to this list - might be a couple of messages each week - might be
a message or two each day - all depends on what comes in to me.
efnh
This list is actually NOT maintained by "majordomo", but is a list
Mark, Marta, and I have used in the past for general coordination
of EFNH activities and also for answering inquires. Messages
sent to "efnh@mv.com" (an address we've publicized) go to this list.
Also, messages sent to "efnh-info@mv.com" (which sends back a copy of
our latest FAQ) get copied to this list. Some of what this was used
for will now take place in "efnh-network", however, if anyone is
interested in helping with the *administrative/organizational*
end of EFNH (answering inquiries, planning general meetings, other
assorted administrivia), please send a message to "efnh@efnh.org" and
we can add you to this list.
SUBSCRIPTION INFORMATION
To subscribe to any of these lists (except "efnh"), simply send
an e-mail message to:
majordomo@mv.com
with a message body of:
subscribe efnh-listname (ex. "subscribe efnh-congress")
Please note that if you want to subscribe to multiple lists, you can put
multiple "subscribe" lines within the *same* message to
"majordomo".
If you want to remove your name from a mailing list, send a message
to "majordomo@mv.com" with the command:
unsubscribe efnh-listname
For a description of other majordomo commands, send a message to
"majordomo@mv.com" with a body message of "help".
EFNH sponsors occasional meetings on topics of interest.
